Fresh Patch

Winter is in full force in Boulder, Colorado, which means wild green grass is mostly brown and buried under snow.  This can be a real problem for my feline companion, Simon, who absolutely loves playing in grass. Whether it’s catching his favorite grasshopper or butterfly or stretching out, Simon is a huge grass aficionado.  Unlike most indoor house cats, Simon doesn’t let the weather bother him.  He has no qualms about frolicking in the snow, but if he has a preference, he will choose grass over snow any day.

Recently, Simon and I discovered Fresh Patch, which is something unlike any cat innovation we have yet to come across.  Fresh Patch is a clever portable container of real living grass for your pet, and this innovation made its grand debut on the TV show, Shark Tank as a new method to train your dogs to potty indoors.  When I first came across Fresh Patch, I was a little hesitant about trying it out because it seemed like the advertising was geared towards potty training dogs.  While Simon loves grass outdoors, he doesn’t go potty in grass unless he can dig a hole.  So at first glance I didn’t see how this would work with cats.  Cats need dirt, sand, or litter to dig holes to potty; so, at first, I was oblivious to other usages.

Despite my reservations with Fresh Patch, I decided to give it a try.

Fresh Patch arrived in the mail in a nice rectangular box.  I got the 16 x 12 version suited for a small dog or cat.  As soon as I took the grass container out, Simon raced over to investigate the new smells.  Simon usually thinks every box contains a present for him or the box itself is a present.  In this case, he was right.  I set the container on the ground and immediately Simon went over to examine it. Just as i suspected, he began munching on the grass.  I’m not sure why cats love to eat grass, but my furry feline definitely is a grass eater.

Fresh Patch comes in a beautiful wooden container which matched my kitchen table nicely, so I decided to prop it on my table as a decor piece.  I wasn’t expecting Simon to potty in it, so I thought it would be a nice accent.  Simon also loves to sit on the table to look out the window, so it seemed like the ideal placement.  Within a short time, Simon was making the plot of grass his new bed.  I immediately took out my camera and began snapping away and couldn’t believe my eyes. Fresh Patch was a kitty bed!

Over the next couple days, a snow storm rolled in, and Simon and I were mostly indoors.  Simon took to his Fresh Patch every chance he could get.  He would bring hisfavorite toys like bubble gum wrappers and string and roll around the grass like he just caught an insect.  I never saw Simon so happy with delight with his new found grass pen.  I soon realized that Fresh Patch was the most perfect gift ever.

Maybe for dogs it’s a place to go potty, but for cats like Simon, it’s simply grass heaven. To top it off, it also serves as a beautiful accent to my home decor, not to mention a place where Simon can sit nicely while I eat at the table.  Typically, Simon tries to eat human food at the table, but now I tell him to wait calmly in his Fresh Patch.

I am so thrilled about Fresh Patch that I just ordered a larger one, so that Simon can run around in it. I would highly recommend Fresh Patch to anyone with a dog, cat, or other small pet.  Please take a look at their site – www.freshpatch.com  for more information.
